My Most Rejected Story Is Out In The World

I wrote Chameleon back in 2023 for The Hope Prize (a competition jointly run by Readings and Simon and Schuster, sadly with an absolutely exorbitant $25 entry fee, and a questionable approach to the copyright of the stories authors submit).

It wasn’t selected for the shortlist, and over the past 3 years I’ve submitted it to 22 other anthologies, competitions and magazines, for 22 rejections (some rather nice rejections, it must be said, but rejections none-the-less).

Then, in March this year, I heard back from the editors of Fission, the annual anthology published by the British Science Fiction Association), advising me that Chameleon was one of twenty stories (out of over 400 submissions) that accepted for publication.

It was a lovely email to receive. I’d always believed in Chameleon, and it was gratifying to know somebody else respond to it the same way I did.

Fission #6 is available now, so get yourself a copy. There’s nineteen other great stories in there, a real mix of science fiction, fantasy and horror, so it’s well worth your time.
